What Are Leach Lines?

A leach line is a long trench filled with washed gravel and a perforated horizontal pipe running through the middle. As wastewater leaves the septic tank, it flows through the leach lines where it can drain back into the ground. Some septic systems use drain wells instead of leach lines. Both systems serve the same purpose: they allow water to percolate back into the soil, promoting safe wastewater disposal.

How Leach Lines Are Installed

Leach line trenches are first dug and filled with gravel. After the gravel is installed, the perforated pipe is laid level on the gravel to allow even distribution of water. Once the pipe is in place, another layer of gravel is poured on top to embed the pipe. The final step involves covering the gravel with geo-textile paper to prevent loose soil from mixing with the clean gravel, ensuring the system remains efficient.

Leach Line Regulations in Fresno County

In Fresno County, the maximum length for a leach line is 100 feet. Standard leach lines are 2 feet wide with 3 feet of gravel below the perforated pipe. Depending on your location, you may need an engineer to design the leach lines for your system. In such cases, you may need an engineered septic system to account for specific soil and drainage conditions. The amount of gravel can vary, and the soil septic factor determines how much leach field area is required. Sometimes, test holes are necessary to determine the soil factor, while other times, the information may already be known.

Leach Line Maintenance and Care

It’s crucial to know where the leach lines are located on your property. Avoid planting trees too close to them, as tree roots often seek out the moisture in the leach lines. Roots can clog the pipe, preventing water from flowing properly through the trench. Regular septic inspections and maintenance can help detect early signs of damage and ensure your leach lines are working efficiently.
