Why Choose Hydro Excavation?

When excavation is required near sensitive underground utilities, hydro excavation, also known as vacuum excavation or non-destructive digging, provides a safer and more precise method compared to traditional digging techniques. By using high-pressure water to break up soil and a powerful vacuum to remove the debris, hydro excavation minimizes the risk of damage to critical infrastructure like gas lines, power cables, fiber optic networks, water mains, and sewer systems.

Traditional excavation methods with heavy machinery can be risky, leading to costly repairs and potentially dangerous situations if utilities are damaged. Hydro excavation eliminates these risks, making it the preferred choice for:

  • Utility Location and Exposure: Safely exposing utilities for maintenance or construction.
  • Potholing and Daylighting: Quick, accurate verification of utility locations.
  • Trenching: Creating narrow, precise trenches for laying new utilities.
  • Debris Removal: Safely clearing soil and debris around utility lines without damage.
  • Landscaping and Construction Projects: Providing precise excavation for landscaping or structural needs.

The Benefits of Hydro Excavation

  • Non-Destructive Digging: Excavating near underground utilities without causing damage.
  • Cost Efficiency: Avoids expensive repairs and project delays related to utility damage.
  • Environmental Friendliness: Minimizes soil disturbance and prevents contamination of surrounding areas.
  • Precision and Accuracy: Allows for precision excavation in congested or sensitive areas.

Hydro Excavation FAQ

  • What sort of access does Big Bore need to do hydro excavation?

Our hoses need a minimum of 10" diameter clearance for hydro excavation. Additionally, it is best for us if a water supply is either on site or close by. Our truck is fairly large (8' wide), so wide openings for access with clearance for parking work best

  • What requirements does Big Bore have for dumping spoils?

For most hydro excavation, we require spoils be dumped somewhere on site or arrangements made with a dumping location in advance.

  • Who is responsible for dumping arrangements?

We recommend dumping on-site if possible, but if dumping arrangements need to be made, we would be happy to help look into that together.

  • What is hydro excavation used for?

Hydro excavation is used for exposing underground utilities, trenching, potholing, and debris removal.

  • Is hydro excavation better than traditional digging?

It depends on the situation. For excavating around sensitive underground utilities hydro excavation is safer, and minimizes the risk of damaging underground utilities.

  • What industries benefit most from hydro excavation?

Construction, utility companies, municipalities, and industrial facilities use hydro excavation for precision digging.

  • Does hydro excavation require special permits?

Some municipalities require permits, especially when working near public infrastructure. We handle permit requirements if needed.
